stupid bank teller didn't even know to pocket these dollars!!!
So, i went to cash my paycheck on friday, i usually just use the drive-up window but the line of cars was too long for me to wait so i parked and went inside. this was one of those small, drive up only, side branches of my bank. sitting on the counter next to the change tray is a stack of big dollar coins with an Ike on top.
so, i as the teller "can i buy that stack of Ike dollars from ya? i don't see too many of those anymore." she says "sure, some lady brought them in and i don't even know what to do with them." she grabbs the stack and hands it over and this is what i got for $8. :aetsch: and yes, the 1889 morgan in the center is AU. http://usera.imagecave.com/grizzlyarms/mags006-copy.jpg |

Re: stupid bank teller didn't even know to pocket these dollars!!!
If that 89 is a CC... wooo doggies. I just recently sold one in EF45 for several thousand.
I'm not jealous either... grumble, grumble, $#@*! |
Re: stupid bank teller didn't even know to pocket these dollars!!!
lucky dog, were any of the IKE's silver?:signs1:
|
Re: stupid bank teller didn't even know to pocket these dollars!!!
Not any CCs, and the Ikes aren't silver. i figure someone was just going through the effects of a late father or husband or something and didn't know their value.
and the ~20yo teller didn't have a clue. other than that they didn't fit in her coin holder. |
Re: stupid bank teller didn't even know to pocket these dollars!!!
Good God, most people are dumb!
Good haul there! :s9: |
Re: stupid bank teller didn't even know to pocket these dollars!!!
Damn that's sweet! I'll be going to the window of the new-hire 20-something girl at my bank more often, now.

Re: stupid bank teller didn't even know to pocket these dollars!!!
Nice Score. It never hurts to ask. As Americans become more and more dumbed down, perhaps more of these will surface.

Re: stupid bank teller didn't even know to pocket these dollars!!!
It seems that 99% of all tellers/bankers know the face value of money and banking procedures and that's about it.
I thought I had one teller I know, interested in putting some of her money into silver. But when she looked at one of my generic rounds she said: 'No, I could never do that'. Idiot... I was talking to an assistant manager in another bank. I was talking about the dollar index and what's going on in other countries in regards to the dollar. He had no clue what I was talking about. But I do know a manager of a bank who expects the USA and it's banks to collapse in the future. It's one thing to talk about it on Internet forums and another to hear it from her. I was stunned... |
Re: stupid bank teller didn't even know to pocket these dollars!!!

Unfortunately, the 1889 morgan in the center looks like it has been cleaned. Still, it's worth a lot more than the FRN you traded for it! |

I'm not very familiar with Morgan or Peace dollars. Say the price of silver is at the spot where a pre'64 dime is worth $1.00, and a pre'64 halve is worth 5.00... what would a Morgan and/or Peace be worth? $10.00 each, right?

The dollars have a little more silver than the equivalent face value in dimes, quarters or halves. The composition is slightly different. Again: www.coinflation.com |

Have a friend who is connected with several bank managers. One particular manager calls him up one day and says..."Joe". Some lady came in here with 7 of those old gold coins that say $20 on them. Are you interested? He says... how much.? She says.... $20 each silly. That's what I gave her for them, but I know nothing about coins, plus she had some silver ones too. I think he got a speeding ticket driving to the bank. I'm going to try to get connected to a couple tellers. TG |
Re: stupid bank teller didn't even know to pocket these dollars!!!
I scored eight 1971 S mint Ikes the same way.
I laughed all the way to my personal bank. h |

Morgans minted 1887-1921 have a wide range of numismatic value. Just go look some of them up on ebay. I am not a collector of Morgans, but if I can buy them at or a little over spot, I will. They are easy to turn around and sell to a collector for big bucks. Then I can take that extra cash and buy more silver. |

Veritas, Go to http://www.coinflation.com
Morgan, Peace (up to 1935) and all silver based coinage...dimes, quarters, halves up to '64 were 90% silver. This only includes the 1964 version of the Kennedy Half. After '64 only the '65-'70 Kennedy halves were 40% silver. The only Ike dollars that were 40% silver were minted in SF and were issued in plastic packs or proof sets. The plastic packs were 'uncirculated' and the proof sets were proof coins. Coinage after '64 are mostly 92% copper and 8% nickel and currently have about 25% of their face value in metal content. Kruggerand is correct in that 10 silver dimes is basically the same intrinsic metal value as a $1.00 silver dollar. But as you mentioned, many silver dollars seem to have a higher collectable value than dimes or other denominations, but that can also depend on their mintage. Pre-'65 coinage that doesn't have numisatic value is sometimes called "junk silver' and can be bought on several websites that sell silver. You seem to be confusing silver %percentage and the actual weight of the silver in oz. P.S. What other monetary and political acts occured in 1964? Kennedy assasination and the stoppage of the silver certificates that Kennedy had just authorized to go into circulation. Removing silver from the coinage was just another way to pave the way for futher inflation and deflation of the dollar. TG |
